Looking For Winter Sun in Dubai? Here's Why You Should Try Abu Dhabi Instead

I'm sure you've been tempted to visit Dubai at least once. You have to admit, when it comes to promoting the Middle Eastern hotspot, the influencers do their job well, but the futuristic shopping malls, skyscrapers (including the tallest building in the world) and man-made islands make it pretty easy to show off this tropical paradise too. But should more of us be considering heading to Abu Dhabi instead?

Since covid, I've seen a huge surge in people jetting off to Dubai, with many choosing the destination as a place to work as a digital nomad or to settle down and start a new life, thanks to it's tax-free benefits, quality of life and hot weather (which we severely lack in the UK). In fact, a google trends report reveals that the search term "winter sun" reached a five-year high in October, with UK travellers searching for all-inclusive resorts, the best beaches and unforgettable hiking experiences.

Dubai is undoubtedly a popular hotspot for us Brits, with just over 1.2 million people from the UK visiting the city in 2023 alone, according to a report by Global Media Insight. That same year, there was an approximate 19.43% increase in international visitors to Dubai in 2023 compared to the year before, which begs the question, is Dubai becoming too crowded?

As with other holiday destinations that we love, during peak season it can be difficult to get tickets to attractions or score reservations at the hottest restaurants. But, thanks to an exclusive trip with Expedia, I got to experience the wonder of a holiday destination just an hour and a half away from the hustle and bustle of Dubai. Enter: Abu Dhabi.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a camel, Saadiyat Island and UAE flag

Abu Dhabi offers the glamour of Dubai minus the hectic energy and while still feeling like a hidden gem. Using their Unpack '25 Travel Trends report as a reference, Expedia took us around town to experience landmarks like the remarkable Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque via Private Tour (£58, originally £63). We explored the luxury of the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental and stayed in the centre of the action at the Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche (£175).

A visit to the capital of the United Arab Emirates can be as personalised as you'd like — with many different attractions, landmarks, experiences and offerings, there's something for you, no matter what your holiday expectations are. For example, for an all-inclusive beach stay where all you want to do is relax, rest and sip on cocktails, I'd highly recommend the Jumeirah Saadiyat Island Hotel (£483). Take a dip in the clear warm sea or sunbathe on the white, Caribbean-esque sand. Enjoy chill music and tasty cocktails by the pool or indulge in a Mediterranean lunch spread at the Sal restaurant.

If you're looking for a cultural escape, you can learn more about Emirati culture and the Emirati royal family by visiting the majestic Qasr Al Wotan, the presidential palace which allows visitors to discover the rich legacy of knowledge traditions that have shaped the UAE, or go back to basics and take a look inside the birthplace of the founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, at the Qasr Al Hosn (£10).

Dive into art with a visit to France's largest cultural project abroad, the Louvre at Saadiyat Island, which will soon be home to the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, too. And finally, for thrills and adventure, kayak through mangroves at the Jubail Mangrove Park, ride a camel in the vast desert landscape just outside town or head down to Ferrari World (£72) to ride the fastest rollercoaster in the world, before catching up on a much-needed shopping spree at Yas Mall.

While Dubai dazzles with its glitzy skyscrapers and bustling nightlife, I felt Abu Dhabi offers a more refined and authentic experience, from cultural gems, tranquil beaches and lush, luxury resorts. Abu Dhabi's vibrant food scene, serene mangroves, and stunning desert landscapes provide a blend of old and new that's perfect for travellers seeking a memorable yet relaxed UAE getaway.
